Bloomfield’s Cable Carruth Named Athlete of the Week
Bloomfield High School junior Cable Carruth delivered an outstanding performance in all three phases of the game, helping the Bobcats open their season with a 45–36 victory over Class 6A Clovis.
Carruth caught seven passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns, giving sophomore quarterback Wyatt Babcock a dependable target throughout the game. He was equally dangerous on special teams, returning four kickoffs for 186 yards.
His biggest play came on the opening kickoff of the second half when he broke free for a 73-yard touchdown return.
Carruth finished with 358 combined receiving and kickoff-return yards and three touchdowns. He also made his presence felt defensively with an interception, along with several hard hits and pass deflections.
Bloomfield head coach Mike Kovacs said Carruth’s durability and dependability stood out as much as the big plays.
“I think his durability impressed me,” Kovacs said. “He stayed in that game a lot, got a lot of reps and was consistent and reliable. He just made plays, especially on the kickoff return. We didn’t see that coming. That was fantastic.”
Kovacs described Carruth as the type of all-around player a coach wants to place in situations where he can succeed.
“He had the hits on defense and the deflections,” Kovacs said. “He’s just an all-around kid that you want to put in a successful situation.”
Offensively, Kovacs believes Carruth’s precise route running makes him particularly difficult for opposing defenses to contain.
“He’s hard to get a hand on, and he always seems to find the open grass where he needs to be,” Kovacs said. “He’ll make a clutch catch. He does such a great job with his practice and preparation, and he’s just a hard worker.”
Kovacs said teams may have trouble trying to cover Carruth with only one defender. He expects future opponents to give Carruth additional attention, which could create opportunities for Bloomfield’s other receivers.
“For other teams to say they can just man him up, I think they’re going to have an issue with that,” Kovacs said. “They might bracket him this week, and I hope that opens everybody else because we have three other receivers who are really good.”
Beyond the statistics, Kovacs said Carruth’s work ethic has a positive effect on everyone around him.
“He always works hard, and he elevates anybody who is around him to his level when he’s working out,” Kovacs said.
For producing 358 combined yards, scoring three touchdowns and contributing defensively in Bloomfield’s season-opening victory, Cable Carruth is the San Juan County Sports Athlete of the Week.
