Kamora Henry has become one of the most dominant softball players in the state of New Mexico this season, and according to Aztec head coach Josh French, her success is no accident.
The Aztec Tigers standout has been incredible both in the circle and at the plate, helping lead Aztec to a District 1-4A championship and the number two seed in the state tournament. Kamora has piled up 190 strikeouts with a 2.48 ERA while pitching over 130 innings this season. Offensively, she’s been just as dangerous, hitting an impressive .523 with 9 home runs and 34 hits, all team highs.
Coach Josh French says it’s rare to see a player dominate every phase of the game the way Kamora has this year.
“It’s extremely rare, but it’s not surprising to me,” French said. “She’s a fantastic pitcher, and she works hard throughout the week. Not only pitching, but hitting every single day too. She has all the tools in her toolkit to be successful.”
French believes Kamora’s competitive drive is what separates her from most players.
“She just likes to win,” French said. “Even in practice games or team competitions, she wants to win. She’s the mastermind behind our prank wars too, so she’s competitive in everything she does.”
That competitive fire has helped make Kamora the engine behind Aztec’s success this season.
“Oh, 100%,” French said. “Defensively, she keeps us in every single game we play. And offensively, when we need a clutch hit or a big home run, I have full confidence in her every time she steps into the box.”
One of Kamora’s biggest performances came in Aztec’s district-clinching victory over Kirtland Central, where she struck out 15 batters and allowed just one hit.
“She wants to have the ball in her hands in those moments,” French said. “More times than not, she’s successful because she embraces the pressure.”
Kamora’s ability to dominate hitters comes from more than just velocity. According to French, her variety of pitches and ability to hit locations make her difficult to solve.
“She’s got a rise ball, a drop, a fantastic changeup, and she hits her spots,” French explained. “If you can do that and keep hitters off balance, you’re going to be successful.”
While Kamora gets a lot of attention for her pitching, French says her offensive ability is just as impressive.
“If she gets her timing down, she’s doing damage,” French said. “She hits the ball extremely hard and can hit any type of pitch. She gets a lot of credit as a pitcher, but she’s just as good as a hitter.”
Earlier this season, Kamora also reached another incredible milestone—600 career strikeouts.
For Coach French, that accomplishment reflects years of hard work and dedication.
“It’s a testament to her,” French said. “Through everything, she continued to show up and put in the work. If you commit yourself to your craft the way she has, you’re going to be successful.”
But beyond the statistics and accolades, French says Kamora’s leadership and personality are what truly make her special.
“She leads by example,” French said. “She makes practice fun. The girls love being around her, and she just makes coming out to the field every day enjoyable.”
With the postseason underway and Aztec chasing a state championship, Kamora Henry continues to prove why she’s one of the top softball players in New Mexico—and one of the biggest reasons the Tigers believe they can make a deep run in May.
