Kirtland Central Enters State Tournament With Familiar Expectations
Lady Broncos Open Title Pursuit Friday Night
The calendar has flipped to March, and once again the Kirtland Central Broncos find themselves exactly where they expect to be — at the top of the bracket.
Kirtland Central enters the Class 4A State Tournament as the #1 seed, opening play Friday night at home against #16 Portales. But inside the locker room, seeding is secondary.
The focus is identity.
Head coach Devon Manning has built his program around one word:
Relentless.
“We’ve used the word relentless a lot,” Manning said. “We’ve got to be relentless defensively, particularly in our press. We’re not trying to let up at any point. Even in our half-court defense, we’re still trying to be relentless on the ball and in our rotations.”
That mindset has carried the Lady Broncos to four consecutive state championship appearances, including a state title in 2024. Experience is not lacking. Confidence isn’t either.
But neither is hunger.
Tournament Basketball Is Different
March basketball demands execution. Possessions shrink. Mistakes are magnified. Depth matters. Composure matters more.
For Kirtland Central, defense travels — and that’s been the foundation all season.
The Broncos pressure full court, rotate with discipline in the half court, and turn defense into transition offense. When they dictate tempo, they are difficult to slow down.
Still, Manning knows tournament play resets everything.
“You have to stay locked in to the moment. It’s win or go home. You can’t look ahead. You have to take care of the first possession, the first quarter, the first game.”
The Road Ahead
As the top seed, Kirtland Central will host through the early rounds if they advance. But the 4A bracket is never simple. Teams like Gallup, Albuquerque Academy, and Hope Christian bring experience and talent.
The Lady Broncos understand the pressure that comes with a number one beside your name. It’s something they’ve embraced, not avoided.
For this program, state tournament appearances aren’t surprises — they’re expectations.
And as the postseason begins, the message inside the gym remains simple:
Relentless effort.
Relentless defense.
Relentless focus.
The road to The Pit begins Friday night. Broncos host the Goddard Rockets at 4pm.
