Bloomfield Bobcats Senior Quarterback

The Bloomfield Bobcats’ high-powered offense was on full display Friday night as senior quarterback Manuel “Peanut” Chavarria led the charge in a dominant 60-19 win over Bernalillo. The senior standout threw five touchdown passes, completing 14 of 25 for more than 250 yards, guiding the top-ranked Bobcats to their seventh win of the season.

Through eight games this year, Chavarria has thrown 33 touchdowns with just four interceptions, surpassing 2,000 passing yards and cementing his place as one of the top quarterbacks in the state — regardless of classification.

“He owns everything he does.”

Head Coach Mike Kovacs praised Chavarria’s poise and leadership, both on and off the field.

“I just think his moxie and his character when he stands back there and scrambles around making big plays — he owns everything he does,” Kovacs said. “If there’s a mistake, he owns it, and the kids follow him. He’s really rising to the top. He’s that guy who keeps his teammates calm and focused, even when things get heated.”

Kovacs added that Chavarria’s rise from backup to elite quarterback didn’t happen overnight.

“He was right there all along,” the coach said. “He waited for his opportunity, had a great summer, and you’re seeing the result of all the work he put in — his reads, his quick game, and his ability to see the field.”

Adjustments and teamwork

Chavarria credited Friday night’s success to halftime adjustments and his teammates’ execution.

“Our short game, getting the ball out quick, made the difference in the second half,” he said. “In the first half, we were trying to go deep, but they were blitzing six every time, so we had to make adjustments — and it worked.”

Despite the impressive numbers, Chavarria remains focused on the bigger picture.

“The stats don’t mean anything to me,” he said. “I’m just worried about getting the win at the end of the night. None of it happens without my teammates — the line protecting me, the receivers making the catches, and Payton running the ball hard to keep defenses honest.”

Spreading the ball around

One of the Bobcats’ biggest offensive strengths is Chavarria’s ability to get everyone involved — from Duncan and Pecotte to Kaleb Hutchens, Deasyl Priddy, and Carruth.

“They hold each other accountable,” said Kovacs. “That’s a lot of bodies to feed, and sometimes you’re limited on reps, but Manuel does a great job sharing the ball around.”

Chavarria agreed, crediting offseason work for the team’s chemistry.

“It starts in the offseason,” he said. “We’d come in at night or during the day whenever we could to get reps in, stay after practice, watch film, and keep each other accountable.”

A special connection

Last week’s Athlete of the Week, Kaleb Hutchens, has been one of Chavarria’s favorite targets, leading the team with 10 touchdown receptions.

“That’s my security blanket,” Kovacs said. “Peanut is 100% confident in Kaleb. He believes he can bring down any ball.”

Chavarria echoed that trust.

“I can put it anywhere near him and he’ll make the catch,” he said. “We spent the whole summer together building that connection. That Hail Mary before halftime a couple of weeks ago — I told him it was coming to him, and he made the play.”

Leadership and legacy

As Bloomfield enters the final stretch of the regular season, Chavarria’s leadership will be crucial.

“We’ve got to have that commander back there who can stay calm and guide the team through the rough times,” said Kovacs. “That’s the kind of guy you want leading you in the playoffs.”

Chavarria embraces that role.

“It starts with me,” he said. “I’ve got to stay calm no matter what’s happening and find ways to keep the energy up and momentum going.”

“Peanut” — a name that stuck

As for the nickname that’s become as well-known as his arm?

“When I was born, my grandma just made it up,” he laughed. “Everyone’s called me Peanut ever since. Once I started playing sports, it just stuck — and it’s never gone away.”

The road ahead

The Bloomfield Bobcats (7-1) are currently the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A. Their only loss came against Class 6A powerhouse Piedra Vista. Bloomfield is averaging 55 points per game heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

The Bobcats will travel to Española Valley this Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff, then wrap up the regular season at home against Grants before turning their focus to another deep playoff run.

Congratulations to Bloomfield’s Manuel “Peanut” Chavarria, this week’s Athlete of the Week, for his outstanding effort and leadership on and off the field.
