When the lights shine brightest, some players just seem to rise above the rest — literally.
That was the case Friday night as Bloomfield Senior standout Caleb Hutchens delivered a performance for the ages in the Bobcats’ big win over the Moriarty Pintos.
Hutchens turned in a two-way showcase that reminded everyone why he’s one of the most dynamic athletes in San Juan County. The senior receiver and defensive leader caught two touchdown passes, including a jaw-dropping Hail Mary right before halftime that had fans on their feet. It looked like he leaped ten feet in the air to pull the ball down with a defender in front of him — a moment that instantly became one of the highlights of Bloomfield’s season.
But Hutchens wasn’t done there. On defense, he was everywhere — 14 tackles, one sack, and four assisted tackles, flying to the football and setting the tone for the entire Bobcat defense.
“Caleb had an incredible game,” said Head Coach Mike Kovacs. “His selflessness really stood out. He just wanted to do whatever he could to help his team get the win. He’s a senior leader who plays with heart on every snap.”
When asked about that unbelievable Hail Mary grab before halftime, Kovacs smiled.
“It shows everything about him,” the coach said. “It’s a testament to the work he put in this summer. That was a ball he wanted — and he went up and got it. He jumped right over a defender who was in good position. His athleticism and awareness were just tremendous.”
That determination was forged through adversity. Hutchens suffered a season-ending injury last year, cutting his junior season short and forcing him to miss the playoffs. That setback only fueled his hunger. He attacked his offseason workouts with focus and intensity, determined to come back stronger — and it’s showing every Friday night this fall.
Known primarily as a receiver, Hutchens has become a force on defense over the last few weeks, showing versatility and toughness that’s helped the Bobcats make a strong district push.
“I think his transition to being a two-way player has helped us tremendously,” said Kovacs. “His senior leadership out there makes a big difference. It was one of those great finds for Coach Lynch, and Caleb’s really embraced that role.”
Beyond his playmaking ability, Hutchens’ impact extends off the field as well.
“You know, he wants everybody to be successful,” Kovacs added. “He’s vocal in practice, he leads by example, and he brings his teammates together. And in the classroom, he’s been fantastic — teachers love him. He does great in school.”
With performances like this one, Caleb Hutchens is proving he’s not only a game-changer for Bloomfield but also a model of what it means to be a student-athlete — driven, disciplined, and determined.
Congratulations to Bloomfield’s Caleb Hutchens, this week’s Athlete of the Week, for his outstanding effort and leadership on and off the field.
