It was a night of redemption and determination for the Farmington Lady Scorpions soccer team, as they claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over their crosstown rivals, the Piedra Vista Panthers, on Wednesday night. The win not only carried emotional weight but also marked a crucial moment in district play as the Scorpions look to climb the 5A Power Rankings.
Big Rival Win Fuels Confidence
Head Coach Bryce Frost was all smiles after the match, praising his team’s composure and leadership.
“It was a big win,” said Frost. “We went into it feeling pretty confident, but there was definitely some anxiety because the Panthers have been doing such a good job lately. We went in with a positive attitude and strong hearts — and we got things working.”
Piedra Vista entered the night ranked #6 in the 5A Power Rankings, while Farmington sat at #8, making this rivalry showdown even more meaningful. The Scorpions found themselves down 2-1 at halftime, but instead of frustration, they responded with resilience.
“The girls came in at halftime, talked about the good things they were doing, made a few tweaks, and trusted each other,” Frost added. “That showed how much we’ve grown since the start of the season.”
Leadership and Team Growth Showing Through
For Frost, the biggest takeaway wasn’t just the scoreline but the maturity of his team.
“We have so many leaders — not just captains, but players who step up, direct, and support each other,” he said. “That’s what makes this group special.”
The Scorpions now stand at 2-2-1 in district play, sitting in the middle of the standings but with momentum on their side heading into the home stretch.
Tough District Road Ahead
Farmington’s schedule doesn’t get any easier. Up next, they’ll host Rio Rancho (4-1) on Saturday, one of the top teams in the district. The Scorpions fell 5-1 to Rio Rancho in their first matchup, but Frost believes his team is ready for the rematch.
“They’re a great team and they move the ball really well,” said Frost. “But if we bring the same energy and focus we had against Piedra Vista, I like our chances.”
After that, Farmington faces another test at 3-1 Volcano Vista, who defeated the Scorpions 3-0 earlier in the season. The back half of district play will be a grind — six games in three weeks, all on a Wednesday-Saturday rhythm.
“It’ll either make us or break us,” Frost said. “It all depends on how the girls approach practice and keep that mindset.”
Momentum and Mindset
With confidence restored, the Scorpions are playing with belief again — a crucial ingredient in a district as deep as Class 5A. As Coach Frost put it best:
“The girls know they can compete. We struggled for a while finding the back of the net, but now they’ve got that mindset — hey, we can do this.”
The Lady Scorpions will look to prove it again this Saturday at Hutchison Stadium, where another big challenge — and another opportunity — awaits.
