Shiprock Chieftains Football Preview: Coach Ballard Brings Defense First

As the 2025 season kicks off, Shiprock High School welcomes newly appointed Head Coach Douglas Ballard, who is setting a clear defensive tone for the Chieftains’ revival.
A Defensive Identity Takes Shape
Coach Ballard’s philosophy is rooted in defensive fundamentals. He emphasizes the importance of tackling, disciplined positioning, and a ball-hawking secondary. “We are a hitting team. We are a shoulder-tackling team,” he affirms, channeling the ethos of “defense wins championships.” Drawn from his upbringing and prior roles in Oklahoma and at Tohatchi, Ballard brings a hardened, defensive-first approach. During his tenure at Tohatchi, his defense tallied 20 interceptions in a single season, nearly matching Portales with 21.
Last Season Recap
The Chieftains ended the 2024–25 season with a 2–7 overall record and a 2–4 finish in 3A District 1, placing fifth in the district standings. Their struggles underline the uphill climb for this year’s squad.
Season Goals and Vision
Coach Ballard lays out two clear objectives:
Immediate goal: Win the district championship. He cites the recent success of neighboring schools, like Dine College Prep, as a rallying point for the district.
Long-term vision: Use this year as a building block. With a strong junior class leading the way, Ballard sees 2025–26 as a season of growth—setting the stage for a more competitive squad in 2026.
Roster & Youth Movement
The Chieftains return seven or eight experienced seniors, but the team is dominated by freshmen—about 18–19 of the 40-player roster—signaling both promise and the challenges of developing young talent. A standout freshman kicker adds spark and hints at a bright future.
Key Matchup: Cortez
Coach Ballard views the game against Cortez as a critical measuring stick. His focus? Clean tackling, full-game effort, and a confident performance—more than the outcome, he wants to see growth and tenacity.
Defining Success
With 38 touchdowns scored across the previous four seasons, Shiprock has often been on the back foot offensively. This year, success will be defined not just by wins, but by establishing an identity: a team built around defensive integrity, tackling, and pride. If the Chieftains can post a .500 record amidst tough competition, it would mark a meaningful step forward.
