Farmington Scorpions Eye Growth in Grueling 6A District

Farmington, NM — The Farmington Scorpions know all too well what it means to compete in one of the most unforgiving football districts in New Mexico. Coming off a 4–6 overall record and 1–4 in District 6A-1 last year, head coach Jeff Dalton says the challenge is real — but so is the belief that the program is trending upward.
“In the league we’re in, you can be a pretty good team and not look real good,” Dalton said. “We’ve still got to find a way to climb up to that La Cueva and Cleveland level, and those things take time. But there’s no better place to do it than in the fire right there with them.”
Experience in the Trenches
If there’s a silver lining heading into 2025, it’s that Farmington returns nearly its entire offensive line — four of five starters — along with three starting linebackers. Up front, veterans like Tyler Mitchell and Cameron Jones provide stability, while leadership comes from players like Danny Hagstrom, Santiago Gonzalez, and Wyatt Boognl.
Quarterback Brock Kalsich steps into the starting role after seeing meaningful snaps last season, giving the Scorpions a leader who’s already tested under Friday night lights.
Shifting the Offensive Approach
Over the past three seasons, Farmington’s offense has been among the state’s most productive, leading in total yards and touchdowns. But Dalton acknowledges that the high-tempo attack that worked in smaller classifications doesn’t translate as easily in 6A.
“It’s not as easy to get in the end zone right now,” Dalton explained. “We’re having to make more decisions about clock management and even shorten games to stay competitive. You might see a huddle you haven’t seen in a few years.”
The goal? Keep the game close into the fourth quarter and give his team a chance to win against deeper, more experienced rosters.
Summer Takeaways
Dalton came away from summer workouts impressed with his squad’s attitude.
“They’re just really good kids — hardworking, not entitled, and they enjoy being around each other,” he said. “We focus on evaluating ourselves after every game and finding small successes. Eventually, they start to realize those other teams’ kids are the same age as them.”
Core Identity and Legacy
Beyond wins and losses, Dalton wants his team to be known for unity, accountability, and playing without regret.
Farmington’s football tradition runs deep, highlighted by a state title in 2013. Dalton says that legacy is carried forward in how his team competes and represents the community.
“The legacy is our attitude and effort. We want to represent Farmington with pride and make sure our name means something positive,” Dalton said.
The Scorpions open another tough schedule this fall, but with experience in the trenches, a clear plan for game management, and a roster committed to growth, they’ll aim to surprise in one of the toughest districts in the state.
