Landon Begay’s Legacy: A Leader, A Scorer, A Scorpion
In the world of high school basketball, there are players who simply play the game, and then there are those who elevate it—who leave their mark not just on the court but on their teammates, their coaches, and the entire program. Landon Begay has proven to be one of those special players.
A four-year varsity athlete, Landon Begay has grown into an exceptional leader and a force to be reckoned with on the hardwood. From his early days as a freshman, where he experienced the heartbreak of missing a game-winning shot at West Mesa—an experience his coach remembers vividly—he has transformed into a player who can score at all three levels and take over a game when his team needs him most. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone feel worse about missing a shot,” Coach Chitty recalled. “But my, how the tables have turned.”
Landon Begay’s skill set is as complete as they come. Not only is he an exceptional ball handler, but his ability to see the floor and create for his teammates sets him apart. “People forget what a great passer and facilitator he is,” Coach Chitty said. “His court vision and awareness are as good as anyone in the state.”
That selflessness is reflected in the numbers. Landon Begay leads his team in assists, ensuring that his teammates shine just as much as he does. But make no mistake—he is a scoring machine. Averaging 19 points per game, shooting an incredible 89% from the field, and surpassing the 1,000-point milestone in his career, he has firmly cemented himself as one of the program’s all-time greats.
Beyond the stats, Landon Begay is a quiet leader, letting his play speak for itself. His presence on the floor has been a stabilizing force for the Scorpions, and his ability to perform under pressure has become second nature.
Landon will score over 500 points this season, as he continues to build on his legacy, and as his career at the high school level winds down, one thing is clear—Landon Begay has left an impact that will be felt long after he plays his final game as a Scorpion.
