Tyra Holyan: A Force on the Court and in the Classroom
Piedra Vista High School’s Tyra Holyan has earned the title of Presbyterian Medical Services Athlete of the Week, and it’s easy to see why. A three-year varsity standout and two-year team captain, Tyra has consistently elevated her game while leading her team both on and off the court.
Currently, Tyra leads the Panthers in several key categories: she averages 17.4 points per game, shoots an impressive 48% from the field, grabs 6.5 rebounds per game, and snags 2.6 steals per contest. Her versatility as a stretch four player makes her a matchup nightmare for opponents. As Coach Reed explains, “She can play inside and out, and at 80% from the free-throw line, she’s as reliable as they come. Tyra is a total team player and leader who has been named to all-district honors during her sophomore and junior years.”
Tyra’s impact was on full display during Piedra Vista’s recent games. In a thrilling victory over cross-town rival Farmington, Tyra scored 21 points, including the basket that marked her 1,000th career point—an incredible milestone in her high school career. Just a few nights later, she poured in 25 points in a hard-fought win over Cibola, 57-53, showing why she is one of the top players in the district.
Coach Reed also highlighted how Tyra’s leadership goes beyond the stat sheet. “She’s the kind of player who might not stand out at first glance, but when you look at the box score, she’s quietly had a 25-point game. Her impact is far greater than people realize.”
In addition to her basketball success, Tyra is a multi-sport athlete who shined on the volleyball court during the fall season, serving as both a standout player and a leader. Her dedication to her teammates is matched by her commitment in the classroom, where she holds an impressive 3.65 GPA.
Tyra’s success wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering support of her family. From attending her games to taking her to summer camps, they have been with her every step of the way, fostering her growth as an athlete and a leader.
As Piedra Vista gears up for the rest of the season, there’s no doubt that Tyra Holyan will continue to lead the way for her team, setting an example of excellence, determination, and humility. For Tyra, the journey is about more than the points—it’s about making an impact that lasts far beyond the final buzzer.
