Dedication, determination, and an unstoppable spirit, these are just a few words that describe Emma Matthews, this weeks Presbyterian Medical Services Athlete of the Week. A junior at Vista Nueva High School, Emma proudly represents Aztec High Schools cheerleading team as the Head Cheer Captain. Her leadership, work ethic, and passion for cheerleading make her a standout not only on the sidelines but in every aspect of her life.

Cheerleading is more than just chants and stunts; it demands strength, endurance, precision, and unwavering commitment. Emma embodies all of that and more. As a three-time All-American Cheerleader, she has proven time and again that she is among the best in the sport. Her hard work and dedication have earned her a once-in-a-lifetime invitation to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year, a prestigious honor awarded to only the most elite cheerleaders in the country.

Emma doesn’t just lead on the mat—she excels in the classroom, too. Maintaining an impressive 3.8 to 4.0 GPA, she balances her demanding cheer schedule with her academics, proving that she is as intelligent as she is talented. Her dream is to pursue a career in the medical field, with aspirations of attending New Mexico State University or Texas Tech—and, of course, continuing to cheer at the collegiate level.

Beyond her own achievements, Emma gives back to her community in countless ways. She volunteers as a youth cheer coach for AYS Cheerleading, helping to inspire the next generation of athletes. She also serves on her church’s worship team, showing that leadership and service are ingrained in everything she does. In addition, Emma interns at San Juan Hospital, gaining hands-on experience as she works toward her future in healthcare.

Emma Matthews is more than an athlete she is a role model, a leader, and an inspiration to her peers and community. The relentless dedication she puts into cheerleading, academics, and service is what makes her truly deserving of the Presbyterian Medical Services Athlete of the Week honor. Congratulations, Emma, on all your accomplishments Aztec and San Juan County are proud to have you representing them on and off the field!
