In a standout performance that underscored his leadership and athletic ability, Navajo Prep’s senior quarterback, Xavier Nez, guided the Eagles to a decisive 54-30 victory over McCurdy in the opening round of the New Mexico Activities Association Class 2A football playoffs. Nez’s contributions—both on and off the field—have earned him the title of Presbyterian Medical Services Athlete of the Week.
Nez delivered a commanding performance, completing an incredible 18 of 20 passes for 262 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for 83 yards and two scores. His precision and versatility led Navajo Prep to its first playoff win in 11 years and propelled the team into the state quarterfinals.
Nez has consistently been a standout throughout his high school career, not only on the football field but also in basketball, where he helped the Eagles secure their first-ever Class 3A state title last spring. His ability to excel in multiple sports demonstrates his athleticism and dedication.
On the season, Nez has surpassed 1,600 passing yards and is closing in on 700 rushing yards, solidifying his reputation as one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in San Juan County. His poise under pressure and ability to deliver in big moments were on full display against McCurdy, as he accounted for all but one of Navajo Prep’s touchdowns.
Head coach Roderick Denetso couldn’t praise Nez enough. “Great kid is an understatement when it comes to describing Xavier Nez. He’s an incredibly hard worker, both on and off the field,” Denetso said. “Xavier has never missed a practice, and his commitment to the sport has led him to become a state champion. Beyond athletics, he’s also deeply involved in the community, setting an example of what it means to be a well-rounded leader.”
Nez’s performance against McCurdy was a microcosm of his impact on Navajo Prep’s program. Whether it’s leading the Eagles to a long-awaited playoff victory, helping his team dominate on the basketball court, or inspiring younger athletes through his work ethic, Nez has left an indelible mark. His leadership has been instrumental in the Eagles’ success, and his legacy will undoubtedly influence the next generation of Navajo Prep athletes.
