The Piedra Vista Panthers hosted the Durango Demons at the Hutch on Friday, September 6th, in a defensive showdown. Both teams were looking to rebound from early-season losses, with the Panthers coming off a tough defeat against the Bloomfield Bobcats the previous week. The game turned out to be a close contest, with each side showing its defensive prowess—Piedra Vista totaling 228 yards of offense to Durango’s 200 yards. The Panthers opened the game with an aggressive onside kick attempt, but the Demons recovered. A few plays later, Durango’s Sebastian Tripp took a jet sweep 50 yards up the right sideline for the game’s first score. The extra point was no good, giving the Demons an early 6-0 lead.Piedra Vista’s offense struggled to find momentum early, going three-and-out on their first possession. Durango quickly capitalized, as quarterback Cully Feeney connected with Cole Pontine on a 41-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was successful, extending the Demons’ lead to 14-0.Late in the second quarter, the Panthers found life on offense. Quarterback Philip Moreno hit AJ Cockrell with a deep pass to the corner of the end zone for a spectacular 28-yard touchdown. Cockrell managed to get both feet in bounds for the score. However, a botched snap led to a failed extra point, leaving the Panthers trailing 14-6 at halftime. Both defenses tightened up in the second half, with neither team able to generate much offense. Durango managed to push into Panther territory in the third quarter, and kicker Dylan Burns drilled a 51-yard field goal with 5:45 left in the quarter, extending the Demons’ lead to 17-6.Despite several drives in the fourth quarter, the Panthers’ offense couldn’t break through Durango’s defense. The game ended with a 17-6 victory for the Demons, dropping the Panthers to 1-2 on the season, while Durango secured their first win of the year, also moving to 1-2.

Next up, the Panthers face a long road trip to Alamogordo to take on the Tigers next Friday night. Tune in to SanJuanCountySports.com with Paul Shay and Kelly Shay for live coverage of the game Pre-game 6:40 Kick-off 7pm
