Farmington High School’s football team kicked off their season with a dominant 47-8 win over Clovis on Saturday morning, led by new senior quarterback Waylon Schake, who showcased poise and leadership in his debut.
Schake was the driving force behind the Scorpions’ success, accounting for five scores, four through the air and one on the ground. His composed performance set the tone early, connecting with Michael Beck for two touchdowns, including the game-winner in the first quarter. Schake also found Alex Serrano and Sebastian Delgado for additional scores, and Jace Vigil capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Serrano opened the game with a 19-yard touchdown run, and Beck led the receiving corps with a standout performance. Schake, demonstrating maturity and control, completed 17 of 25 passes for over 242 yards in his first start as the team’s quarterback.
Clovis had early success with John Royal rushing for 108 in the first half and 148 total yards, but Farmington’s defense tightened up as the game progressed. Coach Dalton praised Schake and the team for handling the challenges of the weather delay and excelling in the rare Saturday morning game, saying, “It was an overall good team win. Clovis was big and physical, and we handled them well. I’m proud of our players for adjusting very maturely from the weather roller coaster on Friday night and being ready to go on a rare Saturday morning game.”
Farmington will to visit Durango next Friday, August 30th.
