The opening night of the 2024 New Mexico high school football season was a night to remember for the Piedra Vista Panthers as they took their first steps into 6A Football with a hard-fought victory over the Sandia Matadors in Albuquerque. The game, filled with intense moments and standout performances, highlighted the Panthers’ readiness to compete at the highest level.

Before the game, head coach Jared Howell emphasized the importance of minimizing mistakes, knowing that the outcome would hinge on who could play the cleaner game. However, even he couldn’t have predicted the remarkable performance from running back Brig Keisar. In German, “Keisar” means “Caesar,” and on this night, Brig ruled the field like an emperor. With 30 carries for 244 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, and an additional receiving touchdown, Keisar’s career-best performance was the backbone of the Panthers’ offensive success.

The game began with both teams trading blows, as the Matadors capitalized on a big passing play to tie the score at 7-7 in the first quarter. Despite two turnovers by the Panthers, they managed to stay ahead, thanks to Keisar’s dominance on the ground and a 5-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Felipe Moreno.

On the defensive side, the Panthers were just as formidable. They limited the Matadors’ offense, preventing them from finding any rhythm beyond their initial big play. Junior defensive back Andrew Wood was a standout, securing two crucial interceptions in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Final score Panthers 28 Matadors 7.

With over 25 seniors on the roster, the Panthers displayed poise and confidence that belied the fact that this was their first game of the season. The win was a clear statement that Piedra Vista is ready for the challenges of 6A Football.

Next week, the Panthers will look to build on their momentum as they host the Bloomfield Bobcats in what promises to be another thrilling matchup.
