In a highly anticipated District 2-5A Tournament first-round matchup, the Farmington Scorpions clashed with the Sandia Matadors, setting the stage for an intense showdown. Having already secured two wins against Sandia earlier in the season, Farmington entered the game with confidence, but both teams were tied in district play at 5-5. The Scorpions’ two head-to-head wins granted them the #4 seed, but Tuesday night’s game proved to be a different challenge altogether.

From the opening tip-off, it was evident that this game would be a defensive battle. The first quarter ended with the Scorpions holding a 17-10 lead, and the defensive intensity continued into the second quarter, with Farmington maintaining a narrow 26-21 lead at halftime. Despite the Matadors’ efforts to close the gap in the third quarter, the Scorpions held on to a slim 39-36 advantage.

As the fourth quarter unfolded, Farmington seized control with a pivotal 7-0 run, extending their lead to 49-38. The Scorpions maintained their defensive aggressiveness, limiting the Matadors’ top three scorers to under 25 points combined, which they usually average 40 points per game. Mikey Beck led the offensive charge with 19 points, supported by Cody Vassar-Steen with 15, Landon Begay with 12, and Trel Griego with 9.

Following the game, Coach Chitty praised his team’s defensive performance, emphasizing their ability to contain one of the state’s top-scoring teams. He highlighted the improved offensive execution in the second half and commended the team’s maturity in handling pressure situations, particularly in the final minutes of the game.

Cody, Landon, Mikey, and Trel were lauded for their offensive contributions, while Lander, Alex, and Zander received recognition for their defensive efforts. With a solid victory under their belt, the Scorpions now turn their focus to their upcoming matchup against Eldorado on Thursday, with tip-off set for 6 PM. As the team continues their postseason journey, the Farmington faithful eagerly anticipate further displays of skill, determination, and teamwork from their beloved
