The Navajo Prep Eagles and the Shiprock Chieftains clashed in an eagerly anticipated non-district basketball game on a Tuesday night at the Eagles Nest. The atmosphere was electric, with the gym packed to capacity, every seat filled and fans lining the sidelines, standing shoulder to shoulder.
From the opening tip-off, the game was a fierce battle, with both teams trading baskets in a back-and-forth contest. However, towards the end of the first quarter, the Eagles seized control for good. Dylan Lansing’s clutch three-pointer ignited a 9-0 run, propelling Navajo Prep to a 21-16 lead by the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Eagles maintained their momentum, extending their lead to eight points as their shooters found their range and began to heat up. By halftime, they held a commanding 45-37 lead.
The third quarter saw the Eagles’ offense continue to sizzle, as they embarked on a blistering 10-0 run to start the quarter and added a 9-point surge towards the end. Meanwhile, their defense tightened its grip, allowing the Chieftains a mere 9 points in the entire quarter.
The onslaught carried over into the fourth quarter, with the Eagles’ defense stifling the Chieftains and conceding only 2 points. The final score stood at an emphatic 94-48 in favor of Navajo Prep.
Despite missing the previous game due to injury, Jude Thomas returned with a vengeance, leading the Eagles’ offense with an impressive 34-point performance. Xavier Nez also made his mark, pouring in 26 points, including six three-pointers. Despite battling foul trouble, Orion King contributed 11 points to the scoreboard.
In the aftermath of the game, Coach Melvin couldn’t contain his pride in his team. “Proud of my guys,” he declared. “Great energy and effort. To hold them to 11 points in the second half is an unbelievable effort on the defensive end of the floor by everyone on the team.”
With this resounding victory behind them, the Navajo Prep Eagles looked ahead to their next challenge, a district matchup on the road against Wingate. But for now, they reveled in the glory of a dominant performance on their home court.
