Aztec Tigers Triumph 21-14 Over Taos Tigers in 4A 2023 New Mexico State Football Championships Opener
In a thrilling and tightly contested match, the Aztec Tigers secured a hard-fought victory over the Taos Tigers, clinching a 21-14 win in the opening round of the 4A New Mexico State Football Championships. This intense showdown showcased stellar performances, strategic plays, and a resilient Aztec defense that managed to contain the formidable trio of the Salazar players from Taos.
The game kicked off with Taos setting the tempo, orchestrating a well-crafted 63-yard drive culminating in a touchdown pass from quarterback Evan Salazar to wide receiver Lionel Salazar. With running back Mateo Salazar’s impressive ground game, Taos held possession for an extended six and a half minutes, setting the initial tone of the match.
Aztec, in response, displayed their own offensive prowess but fell short as quarterback Landan Frost narrowly missed connecting with Kale Watson on a crucial 4th and 12 attempt deep in Taos territory. However, Aztec’s determination shone through when Baylor Seabolt, exhibiting exceptional agility and strength, dashed through the defense for a spectacular 65-yard touchdown, closing the gap to 7-6.
The first half concluded with Taos retaining a slim 7-6 lead after a time-consuming drive, setting the stage for an intense second half.
In the third quarter, Aztec surged forward, relying on Seabolt and Frost’s skillful plays. Frost’s touchdown run and successful two-point conversion turned the tide, placing Aztec ahead at 14-7. Taos, undeterred, swiftly responded with a touchdown pass from Evan Salazar to Lionel Salazar, evening the score at 14-14.
As the game progressed, tension mounted. Aztec’s offense faced a setback when Frost threw an interception, providing Taos an opportunity in Aztec territory. Yet, Aztec’s resolute defense, led by defensive end Kris Cook, forced a crucial turnover, reclaiming possession and setting the stage for Seabolt’s decisive touchdown, propelling Aztec to a 21-14 lead with just over five minutes remaining.
In a dramatic finale, Taos fought to level the score, but Aztec’s defense, particularly highlighted by Frost’s crucial tackle at the two-yard line, sealed the victory for the Aztec Tigers.
Senior running back Baylor Seabolt emerged as a standout player, amassing an incredible 206 rushing yards on 16 carries, while Kris Cook’s defensive prowess significantly disrupted Taos’ offensive rhythm, repeatedly sacking their quarterback.
The Aztec Tigers will now advance to face the #3 Colts in a highly anticipated rematch this Saturday, gearing up for a challenging away fixture after a prior 14-7 defeat at home. As the excitement builds, Aztec will aim to avenge their earlier loss and advance further in the State Football Championships, fueled by the momentum gained from this thrilling victory over Taos.
