Farmington Scorpions Shine Bright on Homecoming Night with 49-7 Victory Over West Mesa Mustangs
Farmington, NM – It was a homecoming to remember for the Farmington Scorpions as they electrified the crowd with a stunning 49-7 win over the West Mesa Mustangs. The Scorpions showcased their dominance in all facets of the game, leaving their opponents in the dust.
Quarterback Trel Griego led the charge with a remarkable performance, throwing for a pair of touchdowns and running for two more in the first half alone. Griego’s versatility and poise set the tone for the Scorpions’ offensive fireworks.
But it wasn’t just Griego who shone on this memorable night. Running back Waylon Schake had a standout performance, expertly navigating the defense, finding gaps, and keeping the chains moving for the Scorpion offense. Schake’s efforts were instrumental in Farmington’s offensive success.
On the defensive side, the Scorpions continued to prove their mettle. They stifled Mustangs quarterback Elijah Brody, who is known as one of the state’s leading rushers. Ian Fishburn, was a defensive force for Farmington, disrupted Brody’s rhythm all night, leading his defense holding Brody to just under 25 yards rushing, a far cry from his usual 10 yards per carry.
The Scorpions’ defense came up with some key turnovers as well, with Alex Serrano and Danny Hagstrom each snagging an interception in the first half. Their ball-hawking skills added to the Mustangs’ woes.
Even the special teams got in on the action, as Alex Serrano returned a Mustangs punt an impressive 71 yards to the end zone, further solidifying the Scorpions’ commanding lead.
Trel Griego’s touchdown passes to Taushaun King, Waylon Schake, Jace Vigil, and Michael Beck showcased the Scorpions’ balanced offensive attack.
With this emphatic victory, the Scorpions have set their sights on their next challenge – the Sandia Matadors. The Matadors, currently 2-0 in District play, will be a formidable opponent as they defeated the Eldorado Eagles 33-14. The Scorpions know that another great effort will be required as they prepare for the showdown at Wilson Stadium in Albuquerque this Friday night.
